I have been thinking of building one myself and I emailed Darcy Wittenburg pruducer of the "Collective" here is his responce:
The cable cam is something we’ve been perfecting for a few years now and we’re still learning new things about it every time we set one up. Its not really one of those things I can easily explain over an email but I’ll definitely tell what we use for gear.
The forces generated from hanging a horizontal wire between trees can be in the thousands of pounds so everything we use is steel. 300ft. of steel 3/8 of an inch cable, steel cable anchors to wrap around the trees, steel pulleys and carabineers, and a steel trolley to ride on while hanging from a hang gliding harness, and lots of climbing gear (ropes, webbing, harnesses etc.). Our whole set up costs around $5,000 and is about 300lbs of gear. It can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days to set one up. The best advice I can give is start low and slow (i.e. flat) and see how it goes. If anything were to go wrong high in the air or at speeds it wouldn’t take much to get seriously hurt. Using anything aluminum will be too weak and wheels and pulleys will shred instantly if you try to use them with a steel cable. In Vancouver I have bought a lot of gear from is
www.carletonrescue.com . On their site you’ll see lots of the gear I’ve mentioned above.
If you do end up putting a system together feel free to run it by me and I can give you some advice on what may or may not work.
Good Luck!
